Joy.

It’s something we all want, yet it often feels fleeting—like something we’re constantly chasing but can never quite grasp. We might wake up feeling joyful, but then life happens. Unexpected problems, difficult people, and personal struggles can make joy seem impossible to hold onto.

But here’s the truth: Your joy is not based on your circumstances—it’s based on your focus.

Where you choose to place your attention will determine the level of joy you experience. If your eyes are fixed on the chaos, distractions, and worries of this world, your joy will be unstable. But if you anchor your focus on God and His Word, your joy will be steady, unshakable, and deeply rooted in Him.

So, how do you do this? How do you manage your joy by managing your focus? Let’s dive in.


1. Joy Comes From What You Choose to Focus On

Have you ever noticed how two people can go through the same difficult situation but react in completely different ways? One person is overwhelmed and discouraged, while the other still radiates joy and peace. What makes the difference? Focus.

Peter Walking on Water: A Lesson in Focus

In Matthew 14:28-31, Peter steps out of the boat and walks on water toward Jesus. But the moment he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the wind and waves, he begins to sink.

That’s exactly what happens to our joy when we shift our focus away from God.

When you focus on:

  • Your problems → You feel anxious and overwhelmed.
  • People’s opinions → You feel insecure and exhausted.
  • Your failures → You feel discouraged and unworthy.

But when you focus on:

  • God’s promises → You feel secure and hopeful.
  • His faithfulness → You feel peace in the midst of uncertainty.
  • His presence → You experience deep, lasting joy.

Your focus will either build or break your joy.

So ask yourself: Where am I placing my attention? Are you focused more on your circumstances or on the One who holds everything together?

Many people think that joy is something you either have or you don’t. But joy isn’t just a feeling—it’s a byproduct of what you feed your soul.

In John 15:11, Jesus tells His disciples:

“I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”

What was Jesus talking about? He had just explained the importance of abiding in Him—staying connected to Him like a branch is connected to a vine. When you remain in His Word, your joy overflows.

The reality is, your joy will run dry if you’re not regularly feeding your spirit with God’s truth.

Why the Bible is Essential for Your Joy

Here’s what happens when you make God’s Word your focus:

  • It renews your mind → Instead of dwelling on negativity, you start thinking in alignment with God’s truth.
  • It strengthens your faith → You trust God more, which means less fear, stress, and anxiety.
  • It shifts your perspective → You start seeing life through God’s eyes, which brings clarity and peace.

If you’re struggling to hold onto joy, ask yourself: Am I feeding my mind more with the world’s noise or with God’s truth?

The world is constantly fighting for your attention. Social media, news headlines, and endless distractions are designed to keep your mind occupied with everything except God. And when your focus is scattered, your joy is stolen.

The Bible tells us:

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23, NLT)

Your heart is shaped by what you focus on. If you constantly consume negativity, fear, and worry, it will be nearly impossible to walk in joy.

Practical Ways to Guard Your Focus

  1. Be intentional about what you consume.
    • Limit social media if it fuels comparison or anxiety.
    • Choose worship over worry—fill your home with worship music.
    • Start your day with Scripture instead of your phone.
  2. Surround yourself with people who build your faith.
    • Your friendships impact your focus. Spend time with people who encourage and uplift you.
  3. Replace negativity with truth.
    • When fear creeps in, remind yourself of God’s promises.
    • When worry takes over, pray instead of dwelling on “what-ifs.”

If you don’t take control of your focus, the enemy will. That’s why managing your focus is the key to managing your joy.


4. Joy Is a Choice, Not Just a Feeling

One of the biggest misconceptions about joy is that it’s something you wait for. That one day, when life is perfect and everything falls into place, you’ll finally be joyful.

But joy isn’t found in perfect circumstances—it’s found in a decision to trust God no matter what.

Paul’s Secret to Joy in All Circumstances

Paul wrote some of the most joy-filled letters in the Bible while sitting in prison. He had every reason to be discouraged, but he wrote:

“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4, NLT)

How could Paul have joy in prison? Because his joy wasn’t based on his situation—it was based on his Savior.

How to Choose Joy Daily

  • Practice gratitude.
    • When you intentionally thank God for what you have, it shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already present.
  • Speak life over yourself.
    • Instead of saying, “I’ll never get through this,” declare, “God is my strength, and He is with me.”
  • Surrender control to God.
    • Joy is impossible when you’re constantly worrying. Trust that God is in control, even when life feels uncertain.

Joy isn’t something that happens to you—it’s something you choose every single day by focusing on God’s truth over your emotions.


5. When You Lose Your Joy, How Do You Get It Back?

Even when you’re intentional about your focus, there will be days when joy feels distant. Life hits hard, and your heart feels heavy. So, what do you do when your joy seems lost?

Psalm 51:12 – Restore My Joy

David, after a season of deep failure and sorrow, prayed:

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” (Psalm 51:12, NLT)

This verse reminds us that joy isn’t something we create—it’s something God restores. If you’ve lost your joy, go back to Him.

Practical Steps to Rekindle Joy

  • Spend intentional time in His presence.
    • Worship, pray, and pour your heart out to God.
  • Refocus on His promises.
    • Open His Word and meditate on scriptures that remind you of His faithfulness.
  • Serve others.
    • Joy multiplies when you shift your focus from yourself to others.

God is always ready to restore your joy when you turn your heart back to Him.

If you want to manage your joy, you must manage your focus. The more you keep your eyes on Jesus and His Word, the more unshakable your joy will be.
