When Life Feels Out of Control

The Moment Everything Changed

There are moments in life when everything seems to be going according to plan—until suddenly, it doesn’t. That was exactly what happened to our family less than 24 hours before Will and Taylor were supposed to leave for the Philippines to attend the building dedication of Faith Community Center.

This wasn’t just any trip. This was the culmination of over a year of planning, praying, and hard work. Will and Taylor were major donors to this project, pouring their hearts and resources into making it a reality. And now, just hours before their flight, Philippine Airlines called with news that no one wanted to hear:

Their flight was cancelled.

There was no immediate alternative. No quick fix. Just a complete halt to everything we had been looking forward to. The situation was entirely beyond our control.

I felt my heart sink. But I also knew this was a moment to lean into faith like never before.

The Power of Prayer in Impossible Moments

The first thing I did was call our family to pray. Not just a simple prayer, but intentional, bold, faith-filled prayer. The kind that says, God, we don’t see a way, but we trust that You do.

Because in these moments when our hands are tied, when all the planning and preparation suddenly mean nothing, God is the only One who can make a way.

For the next three hours, we prayed while we fought for a solution. We stayed on the phone with the airline, trying to figure out any possible way to get Will and Taylor to the Philippines. It felt like every step forward led to another setback:

  • First, we lost one flight.
  • Then, we found another flight—only for it to fall through, too.
  • Each new option seemed more impossible than the last, requiring thousands of extra dollars.

The enemy wanted us to panic. But we prayed instead.

When God Steps In

Just when it seemed like every door had closed, God did what only He could do.

Out of nowhere, a later flight became available. Not only that, but it was actually a better option than the original plan. Will and Taylor would still leave the same day, just at a different time. And instead of spending thousands more, the cost was manageable.

I sat there in awe. Three hours of fighting. Three hours of uncertainty. Three hours of feeling like there was no way forward. And then, in a moment, God made a way.

It was never about our efforts. It wasn’t about how well we planned or how persistent we were on the phone. It was about God showing up.

Lessons for When Life Feels Out of Control

This whole experience reminded me of something we all need to remember when life takes an unexpected turn.

1. Prayer Is Our First Response, Not Our Last Resort

How often do we try to fix things on our own before turning to prayer? We scramble, we stress, we exhaust every option—then, as a last resort, we finally pray. But what if we flipped that? What if prayer was our first response, not our backup plan?

When the flight got cancelled, our first instinct was to ask for prayer. We weren’t just hoping for a good outcome—we were asking the God of the universe to intervene. And He did.

2. God’s Plan Is Always Better

We were devastated when the first flight was cancelled. But looking back, the new flight was actually better. The original flight cancellation wasn’t a setback—it was God’s setup for something even greater.

How many times have we seen delays, detours, and disappointments, only to later realize that God was protecting us or preparing something better?

3. Faith Means Trusting When You Can’t See the Way

When we were stuck on the phone, losing flight after flight, we had no idea how things would turn out. But we chose to trust God.

Faith isn’t about knowing exactly how things will work out. Faith is about believing that God is working, even when you can’t see it.

Only God

As I reflect on this situation, I can’t help but say: Only God.

  • Only God could turn a last-minute flight cancellation into an even better option.
  • Only God could provide a way forward when everything seemed impossible.
  • Only God could remind us, yet again, that He is in control—always.

Whatever you’re facing today, whether it’s a small inconvenience or a life-altering setback, remember this: God is never caught off guard. What feels like chaos to us is completely within His plan. And when we surrender our control, trust in Him, and pray with bold faith, He shows up in ways we never could have imagined.

So if your circumstances feel beyond your control, you are in the perfect position for a miracle.

Because God is always in control. And He always makes a way. Only God.
