Lectio Divina – “divine reading”

The quiet art of reading a small piece of Scripture slowly enough to hear your name in it.

HE Calls You HIS Own

Five days of guided scripture, reflection and prayer.

READ

First Reading | 1 John 3:1a NLT

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

Before you do anything with this verse — just read it. Once, slowly, all the way through. No notes. No analysis. Just you and the words. Notice what stirs.

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

You don’t have to do anything with this verse yet. Just read it — once, slowly, beginning to end. No pressure to understand it. No pressure to feel anything. Just let the words pass through you, and see what lingers.

READ

First Reading | 1 John 3:1a NLT

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

Let’s not rush this. Read the verse one time, slowly, all the way through. Don’t underline, don’t analyze, don’t try to figure out what it means. Just be with the words for a minute. See what stirs.

REFLECT

First Reading | 1 John 3:1a NLT

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

There’s something about the way John writes this that feels like he can barely contain himself. “See how very much.” Not just “see how much” — how very much.

And then he says something that might be the most important identity statement in all of scripture: He calls us His children — and that is what we are.

Not what we’re trying to become. Not what we’ll be someday if we work hard enough. That is what we are. Right now. Today. In the middle of everything.

You are not an outsider hoping to get in. You are not a stranger earning your place. You are a daughter of the living God. And that’s not something you achieved. It’s something He declared.

RESPOND

First Reading | 1 John 3:1a NLT

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

If someone asked you, “Who are you?” and you could only answer from this verse — what would you say? Write your answer as an identity statement. Start with: “I am…”

REST

First Reading | 1 John 3:1a NLT

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

Close your eyes. Imagine God speaking the words of this verse directly to you — not to a crowd, not to the world, just to you: “You are my child. And that is what you are.” Breathe. Receive. Rest.
